Tarot card of the Week - La Movrev / The Lovers : An original card from the tarot deck of Jean Dodal of Lyon, a classic Tarot of Marseilles deck which dates from 1701-1715.

I’m writing a series of short articles which will focus on my understanding of each Tarot card within the Major and Minor Arcana of diverse Tarot decks that have been in print during the last 500 Years or so. I will then compare the imagery of the Universal Waite deck from the 1990’s to the pre-modern Tarot deck’ cards which I have researched. In particular, I will be focusing on the late middle ages and post-classical era, which relates to Tarot imagery and comparative symbolic associations.
Each Tarot card can produce a vast amount of detail that centres around symbolism, astrology, numerology. Kabballah, psychology and esoteric mysticism. Each card has its own unique charm.
It would be interesting to see that as Tarot Readers we are able to attain the same meaning or as like chalk and cheese, a different meaning from the respective cards, as we start matching the modern / pre-modern cards.

Universal Waite connection – Arcanum 6 - Zodiac affinity to Gemini.

There is a noteworthy resemblance between Jean Dodal’s work and Jean Payne’s Tarot images from Avignon. In any case Dodal’s work of 1701 is a variation of the Marseille deck published in Lyon.
This is one card within the Tarot Arcanum that is often misconstrued especially by clients who select it during a reading with me. Clients often associate the card with new love, committed relationships and a complete life. They may be right but experience has shown me that La Movrev is puzzlingly far more full of twists and turns.
Dodal’s card has one central feature that is not seen in the Universal Waite deck and that missing sign is the go-between that appears with the ‘two lovers’. I sense that this signifies some form of arbitration. Having said that, the mountain that signifies strength is not seen in Dodal’s card but is perceived in the Universal Waite counterpart.
Furthermore, Dodal appears to place considerable emphasis on the arrow through the heart symbol that to me is a feeling of emotional wounds, typically from romantic love. The arrow is Cupid. This symbol is not seen in the traditional Universal Waite deck.
Dodal appears to use abstract colours, in particular the tint of red. I sense that this connects to the potentially fiery and impulsive situation that two people can experience. Red links to the base chakra and it could be said that the hidden message for the client is one of the need to keep the ‘feet on the ground’ during possibly tough times within any form of relationship and that includes the love of self. The Universal Waite card appears to offer a blessing in the form of an angelic messenger.
Arcanum 6 is likened to the Gemini Zodiac sign which for me represents the splitting of behaviours and from La Movrev’s standpoint, it could be said that this card is more connected to the need to challenge your motives, strengths and needs in love rather than confirming that you have in fact found it. Do you want independence or do you want a full commitment? The choices are not easy but the the two supposed boundaries are clearly understood within the image.
So, this card is far more complex than the image portrays at first. It asks the observer to pass on a message of hope, realism, love, separation and the preferred delivery mode is best served by cupid’s arrow (fully clad in cotton wool of course ).
On balance and if both cards were to be presented to me during a reading, I would suggest that the message could well be significantly poles apart, depending on the projection of other cards in the reading. The Universal Waite message is optimistic at first glance whereas Dodal’s La Movrev / The Lovers is more realistic.
