The well-known A Course in Miracles teacher, Gary Renard, did students of A Course in Miracles a huge favour when he wrote The Disappearance of the Universe (DOU). So many students have said that when they read this book, they suddenly understood A Course in Miracles, (ACIM). When I read DOU, it was as though a light was switched on in my mind, illuminating Jesus’s teachings in ACIM. I have read Gary’s book countless times and each time I have learned something new. It is, indeed, a book, like ACIM, that needs to be read over and over again.
Browsing through the DOU recently, I found the description of the divisions of the mind to be really interesting. On pages 129 to 146, the divisions of the mind are described in detail. First there was the “tiny, mad idea” of separation from God. This resulted in the first split in the mind, resulting in consciousness, which is the level of perception. A second split occurred when the mind split into “wrong” mind and “right” mind. Then the third division in the mind occurred when wrong mind “miscreated” the ego and forgot about the Holy Spirit, our link with God, in the right mind. Then came the fourth division of the mind caused by the ego creating the universe (the Big Bang) and the human body as a place in which to live. (See The Disappearance of the Universe, published by Hay House, for a very important, detailed description of all this.)
And so now, as students of ACIM, our goal is to undo all the divisions of the mind and return to our wholeness by accepting the Atonement, i.e. accepting that the separation didn’t really happen. The way is simple, says Jesus. All we have to do is to forgive and let go of all our illusions. In practice, though, it could take a lifetime or more of forgiveness work before we accept the Atonement completely. The key is to make that our overriding goal in life, which means practicing forgiveness at every opportunity on a day-to-day basis.
