The secret purpose of that self-loathing nature in us -- that wants us to suffer today for what we could not do yesterday -- is not there to help us make straight our mistakes, but rather to ensure that we waste the rest of our days struggling to escape the ache of useless regrets. Awake! Detect and reject despair! It is not the guiding light it seems to be, but it is a cold heat that compromises any heart into which it seeps.

A painful regret is a needless present pain over an experience now past, where a misstep becomes the seed of a misery mistakenly carried forward, instead of a lesson learned and then dropped.

Just as it is impossible for a ship to drop anchor and then leave port while still being chained to the bottom of the sea, so is it impossible for us to cling to our regrets in life and be able to move on from there at the same time.

At their outset, right choices are not always free of fear or doubts, but unlike all wrong choices, our right choices never leave us with painful regrets.
